Tips on Moving Out!

Even though I have only moved twice myself, I know how stressful it can be moving house. My dad was a removal driver for years and I used to go out with him on jobs, so I have picked up a few tricks of the trade to make moving (slightly) less stressful and a bit smoother. Here are my top tips to help you move house!

1. Make sure you have a plan - Even though you might not follow it word for word, making a plan is always better than winging it! Note down what you want to put in the same boxes; what needs to be packed first and last; and what rooms you are going to tackle in order.

2. Mark your boxes! - There's nothing worse than getting everything to your new place and not knowing which boxes to start unpacking first and you don't know where your tea towels are! You don't want to have to un-box everything to find one thing, make sure you map them out!

3. Use your boxes to their full potential - Tetris in your items, but make sure you can still carry the boxes! Try and fit in as much as possible, without crushing anything or making it too heavy to carry. You don't want to just throw things in carelessly, as this brings us back to the fact of not being able to find items if they have just been put in a random box. Do this the same with the transport as well, make sure you can fit in as many boxes as possible to minimise the amount of trips you have to make.

4. Get together! - Get your friends and family to help, there is always something for someone to do so always get as much help as possible, but make sure that everyone has their own separate task so no one is tripping over each other!

5. Take a breather - relating to the last tip, if you start getting irritated with each other, take a break. Look at what needs doing, try to change everyone's tasks, and start again! Moving is stressful but you don't want to fall out with people over it (and trust me, I know how hard it can be not to fall out!).

6. Do a clear out - Moving is one of the perfect times to get rid of things you don't need anymore. When you're packing boxes take time to look at what you're packing and think about whether you need it. The last thing you want to be doing is packing items that you are never going to use again and will take up space.

7. Measure items - If you are worried that something isn't going to fit through a doorway or in a space, then measure it before you take it to avoid the hassle of moving it twice.

So there we have it! There are my top tips for moving house. I'm super happy about my new flat and I can't wait to share with you what it looks like! We're currently still unpacking but it is slowly getting there and is feeling more and more like a home each day! Hopefully I will be back to posting regularly soon, but we will have to see.

Until next time...

  1. Many moving companies don't' know how to reach their auditorium. I think that a useful step for them is to find an online platform which will display their services like moving calculator.
